Vietnam's Protein Expression Market Grows as Biopharmaceutical and Biotechnology Research Expands

Proteomics and drug discovery create further opportunities

Protein expression is closely connected with proteomics, where scientists study the structure, function and interaction of proteins within biological systems.

Researchers frequently need to produce specific proteins in sufficient quantities to study their behaviour, identify drug targets, develop antibodies or investigate disease pathways. BCC identifies lower manufacturing costs, skilled workforces and favourable regulatory environments as factors supporting expansion across Asia-Pacific.

Globally, BCC estimates the market will increase from US$4.7 billion in 2025 to US$7.9 billion by 2030, growing at 10.9% annually. Increasing biotechnology investment and demand for therapeutic proteins are major drivers.

Other research providers also forecast strong expansion, although their definitions and valuations differ. Grand View Research estimates the global market at approximately US$4.0 billion in 2025, reaching US$7.1 billion by 2033, and highlights growing demand for recombinant therapeutic proteins as a key growth driver.

New technologies transform protein production

Technology is also changing how proteins are produced.

Cell-free protein expression enables proteins to be synthesised without maintaining living cells, potentially accelerating experimentation and allowing scientists to work with proteins that can be difficult to manufacture using conventional systems.

Automation and high-throughput screening are allowing laboratories to test multiple expression conditions simultaneously, while artificial intelligence can increasingly assist with protein design, expression optimisation and prediction of protein structure and behaviour.

These developments are making protein expression faster and more scalable across pharmaceutical R&D and biotechnology.
