Vietnam's expanding biotechnology and life-sciences ecosystem is creating growing demand for one of the laboratory's smallest but most essential consumables: the cryovial.

Cryogenic vials are specially designed containers used to store cells, tissues, blood, DNA, microorganisms and other biological materials at extremely low temperatures. Typically manufactured from laboratory-grade polypropylene, they are designed to withstand storage in ultra-low-temperature freezers or the vapour phase of liquid nitrogen.

They are widely used across biobanking, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, clinical laboratories, stem-cell research, genomics, IVF, cell and gene therapy and academic research.

No reliable published standalone valuation is currently available for Vietnam's cryovials market. Based on international cryovial benchmarks and the scale of Vietnam's developing biotechnology and biobanking industries, a reasonable working estimate places the market at approximately US$3–5 million in 2025, potentially rising to US$5–8 million by 2030.

These figures should be treated as derived market estimates rather than published Vietnam-specific values.

A specialist global market

Cryovials represent a relatively specialised segment of the laboratory-consumables industry.

The global cryogenic vials market is forecast at approximately US$472 million in 2026 and is expected to reach around US$664 million by 2032.

Asia-Pacific is increasingly important within that market. Regional demand is being supported by expanding biomedical research, biobanking, pharmaceutical R&D, regenerative medicine and biotechnology investment.

For Vietnam, these same trends are beginning to create a larger underlying customer base for cryogenic sample-storage products.

Vietnam's life-sciences industry provides the foundation

The wider Vietnamese market is already substantial.

Vietnam's life-science tools market reached approximately US$712.2 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach around US$1.41 billion by 2034.

This market includes laboratory instruments, consumables and services used across cell biology, genomics, proteomics, pharmaceutical research and healthcare.

At the same time, Vietnam's biotechnology market reached approximately US$3.4 billion in 2025 and is forecast to exceed US$8.8 billion by 2034.

As these sectors develop, the volume of biological samples being collected, analysed and preserved increases — creating corresponding demand for cryovials and associated storage products.

Biobanking is a particularly important driver

Biobanking represents one of the clearest applications for cryovials.

Biobanks collect and preserve biological material including blood, tissue, cells and nucleic acids, often linking samples to clinical or genomic data for future research.

One market-research estimate values Vietnam's broader biobanking market at US$383.7 million in 2023, potentially reaching approximately US$702.8 million by 2030.

That figure includes equipment, services and other products and is therefore much broader than cryogenic consumables alone. Nevertheless, it demonstrates the increasing importance of biological sample collection and preservation within Vietnam.

Growth is being supported by precision medicine, genetic testing and national genomic research programmes.

Every expansion in biobank sample collections generates recurring consumables demand.

Unlike major laboratory instruments, which may remain operational for many years, cryovials are generally single-use products. Increasing sample volumes therefore translate relatively directly into increased unit demand.

Genomics is increasing long-term sample storage

Vietnam's expanding genomic capabilities represent another important driver.

Genome sequencing and precision-medicine programmes generate biological specimens that often need to be preserved for future analysis.

DNA and RNA may be extracted immediately, but researchers frequently retain blood, tissue, cell or other original specimens so they can be revisited as new research questions emerge.

Cryogenic sample preservation therefore becomes an important part of the infrastructure supporting genomics.

As Vietnam develops capabilities in next-generation sequencing, cancer genomics, molecular diagnostics and personalised medicine, demand for reliable long-term sample storage should continue to increase.

Cell biology and regenerative medicine increase the requirements

Cryogenic storage is particularly important for living cells.

Cell lines, primary cells, stem cells and immune cells need to retain their biological characteristics after thawing.

This means storage containers must provide extremely high levels of reliability.

Poor seals, material failure or contamination can destroy samples that may have taken months or years to develop.

This becomes even more critical as Vietnam expands research into stem cells, regenerative medicine, cell-based assays and eventually more advanced cell and gene therapies.

Grand View Research estimates the wider global cell-cryopreservation consumables market at US$1.6 billion in 2025, forecasting it to reach US$3.7 billion by 2033.

Asia-Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region.

Cryogenic vials and tubes represent a fundamental component of that ecosystem.

Biopharma R&D expands the customer base

Vietnam's pharmaceutical industry is also moving towards more sophisticated biological products.

The country's biopharmaceutical market was worth approximately US$1.4 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach US$2.8 billion by 2034.

Biopharmaceutical research involves extensive use of cell cultures, microbial cultures, biologic samples and reference materials that require reliable frozen storage.

As pharmaceutical companies increase domestic R&D and production capabilities, demand rises for laboratory consumables associated with upstream research and quality control.

Cryovials therefore form part of a much wider commercial opportunity surrounding Vietnam's developing biopharmaceutical industry.

IVF and reproductive medicine create another application

Cryogenic storage also plays an important role in reproductive medicine.

IVF centres use cryogenic systems to preserve sperm, embryos and other reproductive materials.

Vietnam has developed a substantial fertility-treatment industry, particularly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

While specialised reproductive cryogenic containers differ depending on application, growth in assisted reproduction contributes to the wider demand for reliable biological storage products and infrastructure.

Product quality matters more as samples become valuable

Cryovials may be simple products, but their technical specifications can be critical.

Suppliers increasingly compete around features including:

secure internal or external thread designs, leak resistance, temperature tolerance, low-binding materials, sterile options, certified DNA/RNA-free manufacture, barcoding and traceability.

As laboratories process larger sample volumes, identification becomes especially important.

Manually labelled tubes become difficult to manage in large biobanks.

Two-dimensional barcodes, laser-etched identification and automated sample-management systems allow thousands or millions of samples to be tracked reliably.

This means the future opportunity is not simply the vial itself.

It increasingly extends to an integrated ecosystem of cryovials, racks, freezers, automated storage, sample-management software, barcode readers and laboratory information-management systems.

Automation could reshape the market

Large biobanks and pharmaceutical laboratories increasingly rely on automated sample storage and retrieval.

This requires cryovials manufactured to highly consistent dimensions so they can be handled reliably by robotic systems.

Automation can reduce errors, increase sample throughput and minimise the time valuable samples spend outside controlled-temperature environments.

As Vietnam's laboratories scale, demand is therefore likely to move progressively from basic cryogenic storage towards more integrated sample-management systems.

A recurring consumables opportunity

Vietnam's cryovials market will remain small compared with major laboratory equipment or biotechnology markets.

But that does not make it commercially insignificant.

Cryovials are a high-volume recurring consumable sitting at the intersection of several rapidly developing sectors: biobanking, genomics, biotechnology, pharmaceutical R&D, regenerative medicine, clinical research and IVF.

As Vietnam produces and stores more biological samples, it will require more containers to preserve them safely.

For companies supplying cryogenic vials, cryogenic tubes, storage racks, ultra-low-temperature freezers, liquid-nitrogen storage systems, biobank automation and sample-management technologies, Vietnam therefore represents a developing laboratory market with attractive long-term potential.

The opportunity is less about the individual vial — and more about the rapidly expanding research and healthcare infrastructure behind every sample it protects.
