Vietnam's expanding pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are creating a growing market for drug discovery technologies and services, from target identification and screening through medicinal chemistry, lead optimisation and early preclinical development.

Industry evidence suggests Vietnam's drug-discovery market could be worth approximately US$90–130 million in 2025, potentially reaching US$160–220 million by 2030.

These figures are indicative estimates rather than a separately published national market valuation. However, dedicated Vietnam market research confirms activity across small-molecule drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, preclinical development and outsourced drug-development services.

A stronger pharmaceutical and biotechnology ecosystem

The opportunity is being supported by significant growth in Vietnam's wider life-sciences industry.

Vietnam's pharmaceutical market reached approximately US$8.0 billion in 2025 and is forecast to approach US$14.7 billion by 2034. The biotechnology market is expanding even faster, from US$3.4 billion in 2025 to almost US$8.9 billion by 2034.

As the industry develops, the opportunity increasingly extends beyond pharmaceutical manufacturing towards higher-value research and development.

Drug discovery sits at the beginning of this value chain.

Researchers must identify potential biological targets, validate their role in disease, screen potential compounds, identify promising leads and optimise those candidates before they can progress towards preclinical and clinical development.

Outsourcing creates new opportunities

Drug discovery is also becoming increasingly collaborative.

Pharmaceutical companies do not necessarily conduct every stage of discovery internally. Specialist Contract Research Organisations can provide medicinal chemistry, screening, assay development, toxicology, bioanalysis and preclinical services.

Across Asia-Pacific, the drug-discovery outsourcing market reached approximately US$1.5 billion in 2025 and is forecast to exceed US$3.2 billion by 2033.

Lead identification and candidate optimisation currently represent the region's largest outsourced workflow.

This creates opportunities for Vietnam to participate in a wider Asian pharmaceutical R&D ecosystem as local capabilities in biotechnology, laboratories and clinical research develop.

AI is changing how drugs are discovered

Technology is also transforming the discovery process.

AI-enabled platforms can analyse biological and chemical datasets, identify potential therapeutic targets, predict molecular interactions and help researchers prioritise promising drug candidates.

The Asia-Pacific drug-discovery platforms market was worth approximately US$807 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach US$2.65 billion by 2033, representing annual growth of almost 16%.

Automation, high-throughput screening, genomics, proteomics and advanced computational biology are similarly allowing researchers to investigate more potential drug candidates faster.

Small molecules and biologics create parallel opportunities

Vietnam's drug-discovery opportunity is not limited to conventional pharmaceuticals.

Dedicated market research identifies both small molecules and biologics within the country's developing drug-development ecosystem.

Vietnam's biologics market alone was worth approximately US$2.0 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach US$3.7 billion by 2034.

This creates potential demand across cell-based assays, protein science, antibodies, recombinant proteins, genomics, bioinformatics and other discovery technologies associated with large-molecule therapeutics.

Building an R&D ecosystem

For Vietnam, the longer-term opportunity is to progress from being predominantly a pharmaceutical manufacturing and consumption market towards participating more extensively in pharmaceutical innovation.

That requires an ecosystem encompassing pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, CROs, universities, research institutes, laboratories, technology providers and investors.

For companies supplying drug-discovery technologies and services, the commercial opportunity therefore extends across high-throughput screening, medicinal chemistry, assay development, cell-based research, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, laboratory automation, AI drug discovery and preclinical research.

Vietnam remains an emerging drug-discovery market rather than one of Asia's established R&D hubs. But its rapidly growing pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors provide an increasingly strong foundation.

As the country moves further up the pharmaceutical value chain, drug discovery represents one of the areas where international expertise, technology and research partnerships could have a significant role to play.
